Did you make any New Year’s resolutions for 2020? Was one of them taking better care of your beauty needs? With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to talk about how you can make sure your hair is getting the love and attention it deserves. Our hair does a lot for us but we’ve all had those frustrating moments of dry hair or split ends. All these worries could be prevented by taking the time now to create a hair care routine to give it that healthy sheen we all want! Not sure how to get started? Here are our easy tips on how you can give back to your hair.

How to Give Back to Your Hair

Use the Right Products

First things first, you can’t make your amazing hair regimen without the right products! What you apply on your hair is the foundation for repairing damage and preventing any further problems. At the Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) San Jose, we are so proud that our cosmetology program uses the professional beauty brand, Redken. Redken offers a variety of products that are specific for each hair type or issue so you can find exactly what you’re looking for to help your personal hair needs. Even if you’re doing everything else on our list, your hair routine can only give you the results you want with the proper products!

Wash Your Hair Less Often

We know this may come as a shock for those who feel like they need to wash their hair every day to avoid greasy locks. Trust us when we say that this can do more harm than good! Washing your hair is great but doing it too often can strip away the natural oils that prevent it from getting dry or brittle. Once you commit to washing it at least every other day, you could see a noticeable difference in your hair’s texture.  Your hair will gradually get used to this new routine and won’t get greasy when you skip a day. Until your hair gets used to not being washed every day, don’t be afraid to apply some dry shampoo whenever you need it.

Avoid the Heat

Just because we live in California doesn’t mean we don’t get our fair share of cold weather. Especially during this time of year, we understand the temptation of taking a long, hot shower. Unfortunately, along with washing your hair, turning up the water temperature will take away those important oils that keep your hair moisturized. Don’t worry! This doesn’t mean you have to go the opposite way and suffer through a cold shower. Warm or lukewarm temperature will be enough to give your hair a much-needed break from the heat.

While you’re turning down your shower temperature, be sure to also avoid heating your hair through curling irons, hair dryers, or other heat styling tools. These are great to use sparingly but your hair needs time to recover so you can go into spring with healthy hair that’s ready to try all the newest trends! Just remember to use a good heat protector for your hair when you do decide to use heat.

Brush Carefully

How many times have you brushed your hair only to finish with a brush full of your strands? It may seem tedious but it’s important to take the time to carefully brush out the tangles starting from the tips and slowly work your way to your roots. It’s even more important to remember this when your hair is wet and more likely to break. When your hair is wet, you may even want to switch from a brush to a comb to make sure you’re not being too rough. Pat down your hair with a towel instead of wrapping it and your hair is sure to feel the benefits!

Condition, Condition, Condition

Whenever your hair needs some extra care, conditioner is your best friend. No matter what your hair type is, your hair could always benefit from this simple step and you might be amazed at what a difference it makes for your hair’s texture. Whatever steps you include in your personal hair care routine,  conditioner is a must if you want healthy and shiny hair. You may even want to take this a step further and take the time to deep condition your hair at least once a week.
