An Open Letter to New Year’s Resolution Fanatics

Dear resolution-makers,

Congrats on making it through 2016! Maybe this year has been great for you, or maybe you’re already sharing memes about making it through what’s left. Either way, there’s a good chance you’re thinking about New Year’s resolutions.

We can’t blame you; to some extent, everyone feels like they get to hit the reset button when the clock strikes midnight and we pop the champagne. January is as good a time as any, after all, to look ahead on your goals for the upcoming year. But we’ve got bad news for you:

Statistically speaking, only 8% of those handy, dandy New Year’s resolutions are going to be fulfilled.

That’s right, you heard that correctly. According to Forbes and Statistic Brain, less than 1 in 10 goals set at the beginning of the new year are accomplished. No matter how well intended and sincere these resolutions may be, the vast majority of resolution fanatics can’t or don’t follow through on them.

There’s plenty of speculation on why this phenomenon occurs time and time again. Regardless of why, we’re challenging you to make one simple adjustment this year when you write down your resolutions in that dusty old journal:
Set your goals for the right reasons.

Do It for Your Future

As a trade school, The Salon Professional Academy in San Jose knows firsthand that getting an education and career started or back on track is at the forefront of a lot of people’s minds.

If you are passionate about pursuing a career in a thriving industry, or you’ve been wanting to get back into post-secondary education, the best time is always now. December isn’t too soon, and February isn’t too late; do it because you want to invest in your future and your success.

Goal setting is all about keeping your eyes on the endgame, and there are a myriad of career paths and opportunities that our graduates can take advantage of. Don’t forget, your career doesn’t wait for the next new year to come.

Do It Because It Makes You Happy

It’s awesome that you’re feeling like you get a fresh start in 2017, but your life goes on exactly the way it was, even after that next page of the calendar turns.

The beauty industry is great because of the types of people it attracts. In our salons and spas, you’ll often find some of the most creative, business-minded, and passionate students you could ask for. Cosmetology and esthetics alike offer motivated, enthusiastic individuals the chance to exercise and foster these traits. When you love what you do, you never work another day in your life, and we’re willing to bet it makes accomplishing your goals a lot easier too.

Do It Because You See the Big Picture

In the grand scheme of things, most people don’t look back on a single, identifiable year that changed their life. Success is comprised of many choices and actions in our day-to-day that lead us down the path we choose. It’s easy to idealize our yearly goals but in reality, accomplishment in your career or education goes much further and deeper than that.

If your goals include getting involved in trade education, or pursuing the career you’ve always been passionate about, look beyond 2017. Where do you see yourself in 2 years, 5 years, even 10 years? Every day is a chance for a fresh start, and doing the things that get you closer to your long-term objectives is the only thing that matters, not the “new year, new me” mantra.

If your goals include exercising your creative prowess, expanding your education, or pursuing your passion for beauty, TSPA San Jose could be the right choice for you.
