What Does Distance Education Look Like?

We know that the past year has caused a lot of changes in our lives. As we’ve all had to adjust to keep safe, our team at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) San Jose has been working hard to make sure our students get the same high-quality education. A big part of that is incorporating distance education into our curriculum. Read more to learn what this looks like at our beauty school and our plans for the future with distance learning.

What is Hybrid Learning?

Are you wondering how hybrid learning is possible at a beauty school? It’s a valid question and one we’ve been able to answer through the dedication of our team. Each of our instructors have gone through multiple trainings on how to best teach students online to make sure that they can offer their students the best support.

What hybrid learning means is that students learn the theoretical beauty lessons online through Zoom. After studying the techniques, students then come into our student salon to perform the services they learned. Right now to make sure our students stay safe while learning what they love, all our stations are six feet apart and everyone is required to wear a mask. We are also sanitizing our working stations just like we’ve always done.

What Do Online Lessons Look Like?

During their education, all our students will use the online learning platform, MindTap. This system from Milady allows students to learn beauty techniques virtually through a variety of lesson plan formats. Activities, videos, theory workbook, and guides are just some of the ways students will learn all about their program.

tspa san jose students learning online

And of course, our instructors will be teaching students their lessons over Zoom and be there every step of the way just like when students were completing these lessons at our school. Once students master their lessons, they’ll be able to take their quizzes and tests online through this platform.

While at home, students in our cosmetology program will be given everything they need to learn and practice all the skills they’re learning. This means that they’ll be given an iPad or tablet, a mannequin, tripod, and other tools.

What are the Advantages to Distance Learning?

As we said, our instructors spent a lot of time preparing themselves for the transition to online learning. Now after doing this for months, we’ve been able to build out a system of how to best help each student. Part of our lessons allows time for our students to complete their lessons with instructors regularly checking on their progress and answering questions or offering advice. If a student does need extra help or wants to talk about their future career, our instructors can set up a breakout room to give some one-on-one assistance.

Another exciting benefit that’s come from learning online is the opportunity to hear from guest speakers from all over the United States. So far our students have been able to learn from professionals from Redken about a variety of important things to know about the beauty world. As we continue to teach online, we can’t wait to see who else is able to talk with our students and what other opportunities we can offer that otherwise wouldn’t have been available!

What’s in Store for Our Future?

So, how long will this distance education last at our school? Now that our instructors are trained for online learning and we’ve created a system for helping students, our plan is to keep this hybrid learning format. Our instructors are even starting to incorporate our lesson plans and formats into Canva to help us make this permanent.

We’ve always wanted everyone with a passion for beauty to study with us and now that we’ve mastered online learning, we believe this is the best way to give students a convenient education! With this comes a shorter commute time and allows students a chance to have more time for their job, kids, or any other commitments they have.

How to Get Started?

Right now to make sure everyone is staying safe, we’re only offering virtual tours. During this, our team will show you around the school and talk about the application process. If you have any questions that are specific to you like financial aid, we’ll set you up in a private breakout room where you can find out what you need to take the next step.

Contact us today to learn more about our distance education for our programs and find out how to get started. We can’t wait to meet you and help you start your beauty journey!

The Importance of Women Voting

As November draws closer and closer, it’s almost time for the presidential election. Here at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), San Jose, we encourage all our students to vote. Whether you do that by going to the polls while staying safe or through the mail, your opinion makes a huge difference! With the majority of our students being female and now with the passing of women’s rights advocate, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, we wanted to especially motivate the women in our community to have their voices heard.

Read our blog to learn more about the history of women voting and why it’s so important to hear from this group of people!

California’s Suffragette Movement

In California, suffragists were organized and fighting for voting rights as early as 1848 when the movement for women’s voting rights began nationwide. From talking to people on the street to advertising their mission on billboards throughout the state, these advocates spent years fighting for this cause. All their hard work finally paid off! After a narrow election in 1911, women were given the right to vote in California and San Francisco became the most populous city in the world where that was possible. This accomplishment in the Golden State paved the way for other states to keep fighting and eventually led to the passing of the 19th amendment.

The 19th Amendment

Just last year, the United States celebrated its centennial anniversary of the 19th amendment. As many people know, this amendment passed in 1919 said that every state could not deny someone the right to vote based on their sex. Of course, this milestone didn’t happen overnight. What’s now known as the 19th amendment was originally proposed to Congress in 1878. But it wasn’t until the influence of the women’s suffrage movement, like the one in California, that this was able to become possible. The 1920 election was the first one that granted women from every state the opportunity to vote!

Voting Rights for All

While the 19th amendment was a step in the right direction, the work for giving voting rights to all women was far from done. Women of color were often barred from voting at polls that were only allowed for white men and women. The fight to extend the same rights white women were granted continued up until 1965 with the Voting Rights Act. This act finally prohibited racial discrimination and granted everyone their civic right.

Why Should Women Vote Today

In today’s world, it can be easy to forget that there was a time where groups of people weren’t allowed to vote in America. That’s why we think it’s so important to learn about voting history and remember that you’ve been given the chance to make a real difference many others had to fight for. Plus, you’re voting for people who affect your daily life. Everyone wants to have people represent them who you believe can make a positive impact.

How to Prepare to Vote

We know that voting can seem overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. If you’re feeling hesitant to vote because you’re not sure if you’ve prepared properly, don’t worry! We’ve made a list of easy things that’ll help you get ready for November:

  • Research the candidates for both state and national elections.
  • Find out more about the political parties.
  • Review California’s rules and regulations.
  • Register to vote. If you don’t know how to do this, we cover it all in our blog.
  • Look up the nearest polling station if you’re not voting by mail.
  • Remember to fill out your ballot through the mail or at the polls!

Get Out There and Vote

The United States benefits when the voices of everyone are heard and listened to! That’s why we hope all our students will contribute their informed opinions to this election. If you have any more questions about how to prepare, reach out to your local county officials and they’d be happy to help.

How to Register to Vote in California

It’s hard to believe it, but 2020 is more than halfway over and that means that we’re getting closer and closer to the election in November. If you’ve been delaying getting registered to vote, now is the time to do it! We know that November still feels far away but trust us, it’ll be here before you know it. Plus, making sure your voice is heard will be a lot more convenient for you if you don’t wait until the last minute.

We all know how important it is to vote but a lot of people choose not to because the process feels intimidating. Especially for people who are just registering to vote and are unsure what they need to do to get started. That’s why we’ve listed out some common questions, explained what you need to do to get started, and linked to some helpful pages so you can head into November ready to make a difference!

Can I Register to Vote Online in California?

We’re sure that this is a question many of you are wondering. In 2020, the need to do as many things as possible online has never been more important. Thankfully, voter registration can be done completely online and has been like this for a long time. That means there’s already a super simple process ready for you to register online with. Of course, you still have the option to register through a paper application which you can pick up at most post offices, libraries, and government offices.

voting online

The only reason you would need to vote in-person is if you didn’t register 14 days before an election. In California, anyone who doesn’t register before then will need to register through the Same-Day Voter Registration process. Those who do this will need to request their ballots in person and fill it out at their local county election office or polling location on election day.

Do I Have to Be 18 to Vote?

You do need to be 18 to vote but in California, anyone 16 or 17 years old can fill out the same form and pre-register to vote. After completing the form, you will be automatically registered on your 18th birthday.

These are just a few common questions about registering to vote. If you have any more that relate to your situation, this page gives a lot of great information.

What Do I Need to Register Online in California

You may be wondering what you need to actually start filling out your form and registering to vote. All you have to do is go to this page and click on the “Register to Vote” or “Pre-Register to Vote” button depending on your age. It will ask you basic questions like whether you’re a resident of California and your birthdate. Along with your basic information, you’ll also need these to complete your form:

  • Your California driver license or California identification card number.
  • The last four digits of your social security number.

Once you’ve filled that out, your information will be provided to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the signature there will be added to your voter form. It’s really just that simple!

How Do I Register My Party Preference?

During this form online, there will be a section that asks you to mark which political party you want to register with. The Democratic, Republican, and American Independent are some of the parties you can pick. You can even choose to not have a political preference. Be aware though that if you decide to not have a party preference, you may not be able to vote for some parties’ candidates in the primary election. This is different from the general election where you’ll be able to vote for whichever candidate, no matter what your political preference is.

buttons for party preference

What Happens Next?

After finishing your application form online or through paper, you won’t be automatically ready to vote. It will take some time to make sure that everything is in order and there aren’t any problems like missing information or duplicate registrations. Your county elections officials will contact you once your application form has been approved to become a registered voter or if there is any additional information needed to help the process along. Congratulations, you’re now a registered voter!

Ready to Vote?

It may seem overwhelming to register but it’s pretty simple once you’ve started. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your local county officials if you have any more questions about how to register. They’ll be the best people to make sure you’ve prepared correctly for the coming election. We can’t wait to see our beauty family making a difference this election!

Explore Our Temporarily Available Online Education

As we continue to get daily information about the COVID-19 outbreak, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the uncertainty this has caused in our lives. With recommendations to stay inside as much as possible, you may be wondering what you can do now to make sure you come out of quarantine ready to jumpstart a beauty career. At The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA) San Jose, our number one priority is to help our students learn what they love in a safe environment. That’s why we’re now offering both virtual tours and distance learning! Find out what an online beauty education with us looks like and how you can get started.

How Do I Prepare for a Virtual Tour?

The first thing you can do to get your online beauty experience started is by setting up a virtual tour of our school. With social distancing changing our lives, our team has been hard at work to make sure that you can still tour our campus with the only difference being that you’re doing it from home now.

So what does that mean? You’ll still have time to ask our team all your questions that are specific to your beauty journey. During your tour, you’ll still have the opportunity to see our campus so you can envision where you could be learning techniques when our school opens up again. And for those worried about financial aid, we still got you covered! Part of our virtual tour is dedicated to helping you begin the financial aid process so you can find out which options you might qualify for. We’ll be there when you fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and after to walk you through each option!

Wondering how you can schedule your virtual tour? All you have to do is contact us or fill out a form on our website just like we’ve always done it. Someone from our team will be reaching out to you shortly after to help you get started!

How Do I Learn Beauty Online?

We know that many of you are probably wondering what your online education would look like. Thanks to our amazing educators and staff, we’ve worked to shift our classes into a safe online setting. This means that you’ll be learning all about the same skills and techniques you’d learn normally in our classroom but now you’d be studying them with our teachers at home via Zoom. The best part is that you can still complete both your practical and theoretical lessons now that California has approved online practical work.

Whether you want to study cosmetology or esthetics at our school, both are still available for you to get started here! Although we wish we could watch our students become beauty professionals in our salon, we’re grateful that we can still give them the opportunity to pursue a career they’re passionate about. And it’s important to remember that this is only temporary. We’re looking forward to when it’s safe to open up our doors again so we can be with our students as they continue their beauty journey!

How Do I Enroll for Online Classes?

Just like before, you can apply for one of our programs by going on to our website and clicking the “Apply Now” button to get started. Even though our students will be temporarily learning from home, there are still some things you’ll need to provide before enrolling in one of our programs. Make sure you have:

  • Financial aid form and requirements

Scorpion Manicure! With Real Scorpions.

Just when we thought we had seen it all, Mexico’s popular scorpion manicure — the art of applying small scorpions to the nails, painting over them with acrylic, and letting them dry under UV light, creating a fossil of sorts — popped up in our news feed.

The dangerous mani first became popular back in October 2015 after scorpion connoisseur Lupita Garcia, who is based in Durango, Mexico, and her nail salon owner friend, Rocío Vidales, created the unique (and borderline-crazy) trend.

Though the critters are killed before being applied to the nail, anyone daring enough to try this nail trend is still exposing themselves to all the side effects of scorpion venom, including swelling, accelerated heart rate, and even death.

Would you try it? Watch the history behind the madness unfold in the video above, and then see the process in action.

Alicia keys and her “No Makeup” Makeup Artist Dotti.

The Salon Professional Academy, the leading edge beauty school, in San Jose is excited to tell you about Dotti! The No Makeup, makeup artist behind the makeup free looks of Alicia Keys!

20162904_aliciakeys_shot_2_0342rcbwn-617x800 alicia-keys

If you have not heard, Alicia Keys a few months  ago decided to adopted a less or no makeup look for her personal and professional life. This sounds amazing and scary at the same time, but she has really worked the look when she is performing on stage and on her new project The Voice. You may have noticed that her skin without makeup is glowing and blemish free, how does she do it? Well we came across an article in W magazine about her NO Makeup makeup artist, who simply goes by the name Dotti. Check out some of her natural skin enhancement tips.

On making Alicia’s skin pop!

“Right now, we’re doing a lot of ice work to tighten skin, bring the blood to the surface. To basically give it the pop that you need. I stick a jade roller in ice, so it’s basically freezing when I roll it over her skin. I really, really work into all those areas where I want blood and water and energy brought to the surface. It brings her skin to life, it practically makes her skin say, ‘Hi. I love you.'” (Dotti)

On calming her skin!

“On some days, I’ll look at her skin and say, ‘You need cucumber today,’ so I’ll grate a full cucumber, then place the pulp no higher than her brow bone and no lower than her under-eye bone, not going near sensitive parts of the eye. If we’ve got time, I’ll put the pulp all over her face until it draws the heat out of the skin and bring the blood to the top. That’s what most of the cooling agents do. Tomorrow is cucumber day.” (Dotti)

How everyone can achieve the no makeup look!

“Alicia gets regular facials, does acupuncture and she eats healthy and exercises. She knows you have to invest internally for your skin to look great externally. It’s also about how you process your energy. She comes from a very strong place and she comes from a very kind place. That in itself is super important. But it’s about the choices she’s making and the products she’s using. It’s the work of a good team.” (Dotti)

Follow in Alicia’s steps and start getting regular facials in your 20’s and 30’s, to help prolong and soften the affects of ageing. Call The Salon Professional Academy now to book a Dermalogica facial with us!
