Myth Busted: A Career In Cosmetology Can Be Lucrative & Rewarding!

Ted+Gibson+Carlos+Campos+Backstage+Fall+09+M1RmSHnJ6ttl

Thinking about becoming a hairstylist, but keep hearing your friends and family’s outdated opinion on the beauty industry! We know there is a lot of myths when it comes to working in the beauty industry, and  The Salon Professional Academy in San Jose, a Redken Diamond Academy is here to show you the light to a stylish career. We have educators from different aspects of the beauty industry, from runway makeup and hair, film, print media and working for top corporate companies. They will show you that you can be successful, but you need to ask yourself, how hard are you willing to work?  Take Ted Gibson, celebrity hairstylist and brand ambassador. He began his career with humble beginnings, and now he holds the world in his hands! Check out the top 4 beauty myths busted by Ted Gibson Below.

Top 4 Beauty Myths Busted By Ted Gibson

What about Earnings? My parents worried that I wouldn’t earn a nice living in the beauty business, but I’ve found there is no earnings cap. Like many careers, success as a hairstylist is based on desire and work ethic. You can use your beauty school license to work in a salon, start a small business or work in a corporate environment.

What’s the demand? As long as hair and fingernails continue to grow, there will be a need for beauty professionals. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists will increase by about 10 percent through 2024: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/personal-care-and-service/barbers-hairdressers-and-cosmetologists.htm

Who hires beauty school graduates?Beauty careers are available in my hometown of Killeen, Texas, my adopted town of New York City and everywhere in between! Beauty careers can’t be sent offshore. You simply can’t get a facial on the Internet or a haircut from a call center. And salons are just one place where beauty professionals work. You’ll also find us in day spas, resorts, backstage at fashion and entertainment events, in product development labs and in publishing!

Making a Difference. What I love most about beauty is its transformative nature. I can change someone’s outlook with a great shampoo and massage. In my salon, I see beauty professionals changing people’s lives every day, and of course on TLC’s “What Not to Wear,” I work with other beauty professionals to help people reinvent their appearance and change their life every week.

Paying For School: Everything You Need To Know

“Paying for school is becoming impossible.” We hear that a lot at The Salon Professional Academy, San Jose and we’re sure you’ve heard it too. But we’ve got great news for you; there are actually a ton of options when it comes to paying for your education. If you’re a newbie when it comes to post-secondary education, or the different kinds of financial aid just make your head spin a little bit, we’re here to help you out.

→Already an expert in the financial assistance department? You can get your enrollment process started here.

What Are the Different Ways to Pay For School?

That’s right, we said “ways”! There are a wide variety of options available to qualifying students, each with their own benefits, depending on your individual situation

Here are some of the possibilities:

  • Federal Aid
  • State Aid
  • Scholarships
  • Private Assistance e.g. Non Profits, Employee Benefits

Federal Aid

The federal government offers financial assistance to post-secondary students who qualify in the form of both grants and loans. Grants do not need to be paid back, whereas loans do. In any case, before you fill out your FAFSA, you should know the difference between the types of loan options.
Unsubsidized Loans: Loans that are paid back and accrue interest while you’re in school.
Subsidized Loans: Loans that generally do not accrue interest until after the last date of attendance, when payment becomes due.
PLUS Loans: At our location, these loans are generally for parents of dependent students. In essence, the loan goes to your parent or guardian instead of you.

To find out what you qualify for individually, you’ll need to get your FAFSA application going. You’ll want to make sure you set aside an hour (maybe a bit more if you’re a first timer) to complete your application. You’ll be prompted to create an account to get an FSA ID, and then you’ll be able to begin your application.

You’ll want to have information such as your social security number, tax information, any financial records that may apply if you’ve got investments or notable assets, etc. Depending on how you filed your taxes for the previous year, you might be able to import them directly from the IRS website, but this option isn’t available for every application.

State Financial Aid

The type of loans, grants, and other kinds of financial aid available to you will vary from state to state, and depend on a variety of factors such as your income, family income, and more. Our school is located in California, so we encourage you to check out the California Student Aid Commission’s page on the types of aid offered in the state.

Special Circumstances to Keep in Mind

A number of special state, federal, and school specific assistance options are available to students who fall into categories such as:

  • State and Federal Employees
  • Military Veterans

Scholarships from TSPA San Jose

TSPA San Jose offers quite a few wonderful scholarships that you may qualify for. To check out the requirements and application steps, head over to our scholarships page for more information.

Private Assistance

You may have more options than you think for private financial assistance. You can use resources like the College Board scholarship search, or do a Google search or peruse your local media for opportunities being offered by companies in your area.

Additionally, keep in mind that there are plenty of employers out there that will help contribute to your schooling while you’re employed there, from fast food chains to call centers and corporations.

These options require a bit of creativity and resourcefulness more often than not, but can pay off big time in the long run.

How to Get Help With Financial Aid

We can throw all the information in the world at you, and it can still sometimes be overwhelming or confusing, especially if you’re a first timer. This is meant to be a useful resource, but we always recommend that you speak to one of our friendly financial assistance reps, who can be reached at 408-784-4463.

They can provide information like our school code, answer general questions about the financial aid process, and tell you more about our programs.

While finances are one of the biggest hurdles to clear in most situations, you don’t have to let it stop you from pursuing your dream career at TSPA San Jose!
